River Mile: 84.1- river right

Time: 1 hour to the waterfall and back

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. Getting across the schist at the river requires some 3rd class scrambling. Once in the creekbed, it’s easy.

Wet or Dry?: Wet

Ideal Weather: Moderate to Hot

Potential: About 4.5 miles up Clear Creek you will hit the Clear Creek Trail that comes over from Phantom Ranch.

Clear Creek is a classical Grand Canyon river hike. Narrows and a clear stream running through schist make this a popular stop in the inner gorge.
Boat parking for Clear Creek is tricky. Kayaks can catch the powerful eddy right at the mouth of Clear Creek, but rafts and dories should pull over 100 yards upstream where the river is calm. At mile 84, just when you can see a small rapid downstream, pull in along the polished schist on river right. From here you must scramble downstream over the narrows fins of bedrock until you reach Clear Creek.
Walking upstream in the creekbed, you’ll either be in the ankle-deep creek or on the rounded cobbles adjacent to the creek. Smooth black walls soon frame the creek in a beautiful little canyon, and every turn reveals a new scene more intriguing than the last.
About 0.5 miles up from the river, there is a lovely waterfall that serves as a good turnaround point. Clear Creek eventually leads to a nice backpacking trail 4.5 miles up from the river. From here, the trail leads across the Tonto platform 9 miles to Phantom Ranch.
