Shamu Swims Six was started in the fall of 2002, in Dave Chapman's fourth hour physical/earth science class. Inspired by all the gafs in their daily lives, Meg Weichman and Elise Yoon decided to start an awesome band.

Being asian, Elise could play violin and piano, while Meg with little musical training, suggested, "I can play Spanish Folk Song on the guitar." So thus, history was made. The two started writing songs in science class, seeing as there was nothing else to do.

Some of the first songs were "Spitty Girl," "The Ego's in the Nose," and "Curtis and Raul Theme Song." Favorite covers include "Brick" by Ben Folds Five, "Hero" by Enrique Iglesias, and "Come Dancing" by the Kinks.

The actual band name came about in the locker room before swim practice one afternoon, in the midst of a discussion on the ubsurdity of the name "Ben Folds Five" for a band that was in fact, a trio.
